“I have played disc golf for a few years now,” says Tom Peter, CEO of IRS. “Recently a family member was diagnosed with brain cancer, and I reached out to the Central Jersey Disc Golf Club to see if we could work together to raise awareness and help support their efforts with this debilitating disease.” The event drew 72 participants to a daylong tournament.
Formalized in the 1970’s, disc golf is a fast-growing sport in the US and worldwide. Played much like golf, players use flying discs instead of a ball and clubs. Unlike traditional golf, disc golf is often free to play in public parks. The Central Jersey Disc Golf Club, one of many similar organizations in the US, holds several tournaments a year for all levels of play.
““We thought it would be a great way to raise funds for the National Brain Tumor Society,” said Peter. “Because it’s so easy to learn, and doesn’t require expensive equipment, it’s easy for everyone to participate and help out this important organization.” The NBTS works in many capacities to help discover a cure and deliver effective treatments for brain cancer, and advocate for patients and care providers.
“We were really happy with the turnout, and were grateful to be able to support the NBTS,” says Peter.
